Staff Development & Training
"These recruits are entrusted to my care. I will train them to the best of my ability. I will develop them into smartly disciplined, physically fit, productive citizens. I will demand of them, and demonstrate by my own example, the highest standards of personal conduct, morality and professional skill." ...Motivational Instructor Pledge
All certified members who work at Camp “Positive” Motivation Juvenile Rehabilitation Academy will receive a minimum of 240.0 hours of intense job related training prior to being assigned to the direct supervision of recruits. To become a Motivational Instructor each candidate must complete 80 hours of Motivational Instructor Training Academy and 160 hours of the FARM Program Training & Evaluation Program.
The Motivational Instructor Training Academy was established July 1999. The department of Juvenile Justice developed the training academy curriculum as a state certification course for Motivational Instructors assigned to a Juvenile Rehabilitation Academy. The Motivational Instructor Training Academy is 80 hours in length. The Motivational Instructor Training Academy is designed to give the newly assigned member insight into recruit training, provide an introduction to the organizational structure, and familiarize them with the policies and procedures of the Department of Juvenile Justice. During the drill academy, the staff member assumed the role of a recruit and is trained and treated as such. Training is divided into three separate sections including physical training, classroom instruction, and close order drill. Members are evaluated daily on their progress and attitude by the staff member in similar situations that a recruit may experience during training at Camp “Positive” Motivation.
Motivational Camp Training and Evaluation Program:
Upon successful completion of the Motivational Instructor Training Academy, the Motivational Instructor Trainee is then assigned to the Motivational Camp Trainee (MAT). The MATEP will be established by Camp “Positive” Motivation to train and evaluate the Motivational Camp trainee in various duties and responsibilities of recruit training. During the MATEP, the Motivational Camp trainee is assigned to a Training Motivational Instructor (TMI) who monitors and evaluates their progress and performance. Training Motivational Instructors are tasked with ensuring that the Motivational camp Trainee has a vast knowledge of division procedures and practical knowledge of daily squad bay operations. Motivational Academy trainees are not permitted to work with recruits, unless under direct supervision of their assigned Training Motivational Instructor. The Training Motivational Instructor submits daily evaluations, exams, and progress reports to the Training Motivational Sergeant (TMS). The Training Motivational Sergeant reviews and forwards all reports and evaluations of each Motivational Camp trainee, including evaluations on the Training Motivational Instructor, to the Training Motivational Lieutenant (TML). All decisions regarding the trainee’s progression, retraining, or termination from program will be based on the documented reports submitted.
Selection of Training Motivational Instructors:
Selection of Training Motivational Instructors for Camp “Positive” Motivation is completed by the Motivational Camp Juvenile Rehabilitation Academy Assistant Commandant and Training Motivational Sergeant. Training Motivational Instructors must attend and successfully complete 88 hours of CJSTC Instructors Technique.
Member In-Service Training:
Certified members who work in direct care with recruits must complete a minimum of 120 hours of job related training within the first year of employment. Camp “Positive” Motivation Juvenile Rehabilitation Academy will established an annual in-service training program in which all certified members, after the completion of pre service training, receive 24 hours of job related training annually. Supervisors receive 24 hour of job related training annually, to include 8 hours of management theory.
